When I moved to the half marathon training, I wasn't as structured. I did read up on it and found out how much you should increase your mileage by on long runs each week, but didn't really follow a training program. While I met the goal, I'm sure I would have had greater progress following a more structured plan.
Moving into marathon training, my friend George really took time to help me prepare. Not just for running, but strength and cross training. With the rigid training program, my results have been amazing. My run time has dropped dramatically and I've been easily able to increase my mileage with no issues.
Now there is such a thing as too much information. Websites, books, friends, etc. may provide you with tips as well. All of this with good intentions. Beware of information overload! Differing opinions can confuse, frustrate and in some cases upset you. Beware and remember that advice is advice. You don't need to follow every piece of advice. Do listen and absorb, but also integrate what feels right.
Good luck in your own training plans!
